The Somerset village of Beckington, along with the neighbouring hamlet of Standerwick, lies in the Mendip Hills district of the county about 3 miles north of Frome. It held its own races on Friday 28th March 1842 on fields on the outskirts of the village. The main race, a 4 mile Sweepstake, was won by Mr Chamberlayne’s Lady Gray, while a second Sweepstake went to Mr Johnson’s John O’Gaunt. There is no further evidence of racing taking place in the village. |
